Around the time of the Revolutionary War, Ocean City, a small island on the South Jersey Shore, was called "Peck's Beach". Farmers that used the high sand dunes to hide their livestock from pilferers were the only inhabitants of the island.
On September 10th, 1879, Methodist Clerics Wesley Lake, Ezra Lake, James Lake and William Burrell, sailed to Peck’s Beach looking for an area to establish a Christian Resort. They toured the island and decided that they had found the ideal location. They dedicated themselves under the shade of a small cedar tree, which still stands on the southwest corner of the Tabernacle Grounds at 6th Street & Asbury Avenue. The town of Ocean City was incorporated on October 20, 1879.
The Tabernacle was built in 1881 and stood until 1957, when it was replaced with the building that stands today. Religious Services are held every Sunday through the summer.
Since the late 1800’s, the population of Ocean City has grown rapidly. It remains a premier summer destination, boasting eight miles of beauti/ful sandy beaches and two and a half miles of Boardwalk. The perfect family resort must be safe and secure for children. The games of chance must encourage fun and not break the bank. The rides and amusements must be carefully managed.
Where can you go on the jersey shore (New Jersey Shore to those of us that are from out of state) and rent a surf board, a wet suit, and get a professional to give you surf lesson on the beach in New Jersey.
Because of its religious history there is no liquor sold on the Island. There are a number of liquor stores over either the north, central or south bridge to satisfy you need for a cold one.
Want some night life?
You’ll get all you can handle in Atlantic City, just nine miles north of Ocean City. It’s just a short ride down the Garden State Parkway and you’re in Wildwood, New Jersey. Talk about fun! Morey’s Pier’s are worth the trip if you r trying to satisfy the teenager in you. Wildwood is the consummate Doo Woop town with every thing Fifties and Sixties.
Hurry, the city planners are allowing a change without architectural control and soon the town will be full of cookie cuter condos.
